Ok, So I’ll let you into a little secret, I’m not a big fan of flower paintings HOWEVER, lots of people like this subject and it’s a good discipline in observation. For this reason I’m practicing my flower painting techniques. It’s been a while! I’m using acrylics on paper.
Here’s an underpainting with a first layer of colour. It’s going okay but you can see it needs quite a few hours still to give depth and detail. I’ll post the finished paint on this blog soon. No pressure 🫣

1 Day Later……
Oh God! Acrylic!! I want to love you, you are easy to wash off my clothes, hands and hair 😅. You are cheaper than oil to buy and to mix but you are such HARD WORK. You lack depth of pigment, one brush stroke in oil takes around ten in acrylic, there’s a lack of boldness, it’s almost as unforgiving as a watercolour and as a painter who likes to go back in and keep pushing paint around I find it quite a challenge. Anyway, I’ve persevered and achieved some sort of rendering! I learnt how to overcome the paint’s transparency by using different brush techniques. I’m glad I took the time to brush up on acrylics as they’re a good to medium to teach in but I always prefer the finish to an oil painting which is why I have no decent clothes to wear out of the house 🥹
Anyway, I’m stopping now as I’ve spent enough time on this one and I want to get on with covering my sofa. Here it is…
